Spirit of the New Workplace

Discovering the Greatest Possibilities of Work

I was struck this morning by the arrival of one of the baristas at my favorite internet coffee shop, and she just didn't look happy to be there. She was a minute late, and perhaps fearing the wrath of the owner, but it made me think about the converse...being happy at work, or more aptly, perhaps, being happily at work.

So, the question for today is "when, if ever, are you happily at work?"

For me, I like to deal with things that aren't urgent (though I have a tremendous tendency to procrastinate, for sure), that are creatively applying my intelligence to the task at hand, and when I am Getting Things Done! Spirit of the New Workplace designing, planning, and teaching (especially with a good class and like minded colleagues to help) definitely fits the bill.

And when it's grunt work, do the work and get it over with (and celebrate, I might add) (Eckhart Tolle's latest has also been helpful to me in this regard).

I would echo the sentiment about David Allen's Getting Things Done. It's funny, but the first time I ever heard about this was from my first yoga instructor, and I recently bought the book and started putting the stuff into practice. Kudos for the site!

Dear Babohl (or It's?) - Thanks for the comment. How's Santa Cruz these days?
